Marijuana use in South Carolina

Cannabis is the most readily available and most commonly abused drug in South Carolina, and the number of users is increasing. The rural regions of the state, which have adequate precipitation, provide an environment conducive to the domestic cultivation of cannabis.
Treatment admissions for marijuana abuse have risen steadily from 1997 to 2000 and are larger than the national rate. According to the DAODAS, the amount of marijuana publicly funded treatment center admissions increased from 3,651 in FY1997 to 4,967 in FY2000. The number of cannabis abusers admitted for treatment was higher than crack cocaine abusers for the first time in FY1999. TEDS admission statistics for 1998, based on primary substance of abuse, demonstrated that in South Carolina 90 admissions per 100,000 were for marijuana compared with 81 admissions per 100,000 nationally.
Marijuana is the most prevalent illicit substance of abuse in South Carolina, with Mexico the most common origin location. Traffickers using vehicles, tractor-trailers, commercial air, buses, and trains, as well as commercial package shipping companies import cannabis from Mexico through California. Members of the South Carolina National Guard and the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED) routinely eradicate small patches of outdoor cannabis. In August 2002, SLED found and destroyed 6,820 plants in Lancaster County that had attained heights of between 6 and 9 feet.
