Marijuana use in Rhode Island
Marijuana is the most widely available and commonly abused illegal substance in Rhode Island. However, the drug is usually seen as a lower threat than heroin and cocaine because it is less often associated with violent crime. The majority of the marijuana available in the state is cultivated in Mexico. Cannabis produced locally as well as marijuana cultivated in Canada and Jamaica also is available. Mexican criminal organizations are the main transporters of marijuana into Rhode Island. These groups transport the drug into the state mainly using commercial and private vehicles. No specific group dominates the distribution of marijuana in the state. Caucasian criminal organizations, as well as Dominican, Jamaican, Mexican and other Hispanic criminal groups and several local independent dealers, among others, distribute marijuana at the wholesale level in the state. African American, Caucasian, and Hispanic criminal groups, local independent dealers, outlaw motorcycle gangs (OMGs), and street gangs, among others, distribute cannabis at the retail level in the state.
The marijuana trend in Rhode Island supports a widespread and easily available market of fairly large quantities of this drug. Prices of marijuana will differ every season as the supply fluctuates. The cannabis available in Rhode Island is mainly Mexican, however it is supplemented by limited amounts of other foreign based and domestic marijuana. Most of the marijuana is imported from the southwest border via parcel carriers and couriers on commercial airlines. Hydroponically cultivated marijuana is also available in the state. Most of the “hydro” cannabis is transported into Rhode Island via tractor trailers and is sold for $3500 - $5000 per pound. Canada is the main source of supply for this type of marijuana in Rhode Island.
