Marijuana use in Oregon

Cannabis is readily available in Oregon. Most of the marijuana available in Portland is produced in home grow operations. Canadian and domestic marijuana in the Portland region is available in multi pound quantities. Mexican cannabis is present, but not prevalent. Medicinal Marijuana: In May 1999, Oregon voters approved an initiative that legalized marijuana for medicinal uses. In April of 2002 the Oregon Board of Medical Examiners suspended the license of one doctor who had authorized at least half of the medical marijuana applications in Oregon, eight times more than any other licensed doctor. Mexican grown cannabis is transported using existing heroin and methamphetamine distribution routes and methods. It is generally transported overland via Interstate 5 and U.S. Highway 101 in western Oregon. Traffickers usually use passenger vehicles fitted with hidden compartments or attempt to otherwise conceal the substances within the vehicle. Canadian cannabis smugglers use passenger vehicles, fishing vessels, private aircraft (fixed wing and helicopters), and "mules" to smuggle the drug into Oregon. Traffickers take advantage of rural airfields to smuggle large amounts of marijuana.
Marijuana is readily available in the state.  Even though 33.43% of Oregon residents ages 12 and older feel that smoking marijuana once a month poses a great hazard, 23.4% of Oregon 11th graders reported using marijuana the month before they were surveyed.  Also, 12.7% of 8th graders have used cannabis the month prior to the survey and 7.8% of teen marijuana abusers admitted having marijuana on school property.  During 2002, there were 45,458 eradicated cannabis plants and 53.4 kilograms of marijuana confiscated in 2003.  These statistics clearly demonstrate marijuana addiction treatment is highly needed in the state.
