Marijuana use in Oklahoma
Marijuana is readily available and frequently used throughout Oklahoma. The majority of the marijuana available in the state is produced in Mexico; nonetheless, locally grown, higher-potency marijuana also is available. Mexican DTOs, the main suppliers to Oklahoma, cultivate marijuana in Mexico and transport it into the state. Mexican DTOs use Oklahoma as a transshipment point for cannabis because of the state's central location, well-developed transportation infrastructure, and closeness to the U.S.-Mexico border. Mexican DTOs and Mexican criminal organizations distribute Mexico-produced cannabis at the wholesale level. Mexican criminal groups, African American criminal organizations, OMGs, and street gangs distribute Mexico-cultivated marijuana at the retail level. Caucasian independent dealers and Caucasian criminal groups produce and distribute the majority of the locally cultivated marijuana.
Marijuana is readily available in all regions of the state. Marijuana is the primarily illicit drug of abuse in the state. Cannabis imported from Mexico is prevalent and is generally imported in combination with other illegal drugs being transported to Oklahoma and other states north and east. Most of the marijuana is imported from the southwest border via passenger vehicle and sometimes in freight vehicles. Mexican “Sensimilla”, generally found in “pressed/brick” form, is the most prevalent type of cannabis seen in Oklahoma, particularly in urban areas. Domestically cultivated marijuana is also available in Oklahoma, though not as easily in recent years. Oklahoma, along with several other southern states has endured important drought conditions over the past three years. This situation has affected the local cultivation of cannabis. Marijuana Legislation: In April 2002, a law permitting enforcement authorities to spray wild marijuana with glyphosate (Round Up) was passed despite controversy about health issues for local farm animals and crops. For the past several years, there have been attempts to introduce legislation regarding the medicinal use of cannabis and the cultivation of hemp, The legislation has never succeeded to make it out of committee.
