Marijuana use in Nebraska
Marijuana is the most widely available and frequently abused illicit substance in the state. The majority of the marijuana available in the state is cultivated in Mexico, although some cannabis is cultivated locally. Mexican criminal organizations transport cannabis from Mexico, California, and southwestern states into Nebraska in private and commercial vehicles. Mexican criminal groups and, to a lesser degree, local independent dealers are the major wholesale and retail marijuana distributors in the state. Street gangs also distribute cannabis at the retail level. Marijuana usually is packaged in sandwich bags and distributed at the retail level from bars, strip clubs, schools, parking lots, residences, businesses, and at concerts.
Cannabis is the most prevalent illegal drug in Nebraska. Domestic cultivation of both outdoor and hydroponic indoor grows have been constant with many seizures netting upwards of 500 plants. Marijuana cultivated outside of Nebraska and transported into the state is controlled by Mexican drug trafficking groups at the wholesale level. At the retail level, independent dealers, outlaw motorcycle gangs, street gangs, Native Americans, and Mexican organizations share equally in the retail market.
