Marijuana use in Maine
Cannabis is the most readily available and widely abused drug in the state. While locally cultivated marijuana is readily available in Maine, most of the cannabis comes from Mexico. No single criminal organization or group controls Maine's wholesale or retail marijuana market; nonetheless, many small- and medium-sized criminal groups are active. In November 1999, voters passed the Maine Medical Marijuana Initiative, Bill LD 2109, permitting the legal use of cannabis for medical purposes within the state.
Marijuana is seen by some experts to be a gateway substance that may lead to the abuse of more harmful substances. A recent medical report suggests that middle-aged and elderly cannabis smokers may increase their risk of heart attack within the first hour of using the drug. Another research demonstrates that marijuana may put abusers at risk for lung cancer. Smoking cannabis causes large tar deposits in the respiratory tract and experiments indicate that tetrahydrocannabinol, the psychoactive component of the drug, reduces the body's ability to produce cytokines, immune suppressors that are known to limit tumor growth.
