Marijuana use in Illinois

Three marijuana joints a day cause the same damage to the lining of the airways as 20 cigarettes, the British Lung Foundation study reveals.

When cannabis and tobacco are smoked together, the effects are dangerously worsened, it adds.

Evidence demonstrates that tar from marijuana cigarettes contains 50% more carcinogens (cancer producing agents) than tobacco, it says.

Dr Mark Britton, chairman of the foundation, mentionned: ``These statistics will come as a surprise to many individuals, especially those who choose to smoke cannabis rather than tobacco in the belief it is `safer` for them.

``It is vital that people are fully aware of the hazards so they can make an educated choice and know the damage they may be causing. The report is not about the moral rights and wrongs of marijuana, but simply making sure everybody is completely clear about the respiratory health risks involved.``

The report, A Smoking Gun?, also indicates that the health hazards of cannabis have substantially raised since the 1960s, because of increased amounts of THC (tetrahydrocanabinol), the ingredient which accounts for the psychoactive properties of cannabis, in the substance consumed today.

The study looks at existing scientific and medical research on marijuana smoking and respiratory health.

Dame Helena Shovelton, chief executive of the foundation, affirmed: ``Puff and inhalation volume with cannabis is up to four times higher than with tobacco - meaning you inhale deeper and hold your breath with the smoke for longer before exhaling. This means that more poisonous carbon monoxide and tar entering into the lungs.

Recent history

Under the name cannabis, 19th century medical practitioners sold the substance, (generally as a tincture) popularizing the word amongst English-speakers. It was rumored to have been used to treat Queen Victoria's menstrual pains as her personal doctor, Sir John Russell Reynolds, was a staunch supporter of the benefits of marijuana. Cannabis was also widely available from shops in the US. By the end of the 19th century, its medicinal use started to fall as other substances like aspirin took over its use as a pain reliever.
In 1894, the Report of the Indian Hemp Drugs Commission commissioned by the UK Secretary of State and the government of India, was instrumental in the decision not to criminalize the substance in those nations. The Report, which at over 500 pages is still one of the most complete collections of data on cannabis in existence, shows the stark contrast in the way that the American and British governments went about deciding whether to criminalize cannabis. The term marijuana (Mexican Spanish marihuana, mariguana) is related almost exclusively with the plant's psychoactive use. The name is now well known in English widely due to the efforts of American drug prohibitionists during the 1920s and 1930s, which deliberately used a Mexican name for cannabis in order to turn the populace against the idea that it should be legal, playing upon attitudes towards race. Those who demonized the substance by calling it marihuana omitted the fact that the "fatal marihuana" was identical to cannabis indica, which had at the time a reputation for pharmaceutical safety.
Even though cannabis has been used for its psychoactive effects since ancient times, it originally became well known in the United States during the jazz music scene of the late 1920s and 1930s. Louis Armstrong became an important and life-long devotee. It was common in the blues scene as well, and eventually became a prominent aspect of 1960s counterculture.
