Marijuana use in British Columbia

There has also been an increase of marijuana culture in several parts of British Columbia, to the extent that a provincial political party has been formed known as the British Columbia Marijuana Party. Production and sale of the substance is estimated by the provincial Organized Crime Agency to be among the province's biggest industries. In the city of Vancouver, there are many open and almost "Amsterdam"-style coffee houses where it is assumed that individuals can meet and openly smoke (but not purchase) marijuana. These shops number at least four, three of which are all located in the downtown area and have been the frequent target of raids by the Vancouver police.

The degree to which police turn a blind eye reflects what the justice system can bear in terms of enforcing illicit substance laws and open use on the streets will still likely result in an arrest and confiscation. Although police may seem to tolerate marijuana use in some urban areas, the substance remains illegal throughout British Columbia and controlling its spread remains an ongoing and much-debated legal issue in the province of British Columbia. The increase of indoor marijuana "grow ops" in suburban communities and their association with organized crime continues to be a major concern, although much production is done in highly decentralized "Mom-and-Pop"-type operations. The quality, assortment, and price of this marijuana makes the province a destination for those taking an interest in marijuana.

A study released on October 4, 2006 by the University of Victoria Center for Addictions Research of BC and Simon Fraser University Applied Research on Mental Health and Addictions indicated Cannabis use is more widespread among British Columbian people than the rest of Canadians.

New breeding and cultivation techniques

It is frequently claimed by growers and breeders of herbal cannabis that advances in breeding and cultivation techniques have raised the potency of Cannabis since the late 1960's and early '70's. Nonetheless, potent seedless marijuana like "Thai sticks" were already available at that time. Indeed, the sinsemilla technique of cultivating high potency ganja (marijuana) has been practiced in India for centuries. Sinsemilla (Spanish for without seed), is the dried, seedless inflorescences of female cannabis plants. Because THC production decreases once pollination occurs, the male plants (which produce little THC themselves) are eliminated before they shed pollen to ensure that no pollination happens. Advanced breeding techniques like hydroponics, cloning, high-intensity artificial lighting, and the sea of green method are frequently employed as a response (in part) to prohibition enforcement efforts that make outdoor cultivation more risky. These intensive horticultural techniques have led to fewer seeds being present in cannabis and a general raise in potency over the last two decades.
Several opponents of marijuana use, both in and out of government, have exaggerated the increases in potency and ramifications thereof. In the United States, government advertisements encourage parents to disregard their own experiences with cannabis when speaking to their kids, on the premise that the marijuana of today is significantly stronger, and thus more dangerous, than that which they used in the past. In proposed revisions to cannabis rescheduling in the U.K., the government is thinking of scheduling the more potent Cannabis material as a separate, more restricted drug. Numerous marijuana proponents are vehemently opposed, reasoning that if one can smoke less cannabis to achieve the same effect, then it is safer in the long term than smoking a less potent product.
There are two recognized kinds of herbal cannabis, "sativa" and "indica." So-called "sativa" strains are known to induce a noticeably more "cerebral" high, while “indica” strains create more of a body high. These two substances types are frequently hybridized or crossed with early-maturing (but low THC) "ruderalis" strains to increase the range in desirable characteristics.
